The Time Gem, also known as the Time Stone, is one of the six Infinity Gems. A relic that contains and governs all of the progress of events in the universe, the Time Gem is a supremely dominating artifact that can influence Time, at the potential cost of fracturing a timeline or trapping its user in an infinite time loop. Its power is tied to the Masters of the Mystic Arts, who have secretly used it throughout history to influence events to the betterment of Earth's stability.

History[]

Creation[]

Long ago, there existed a pre-creation God that embodied several aspects of the universe. As time passed, this being became lonely, until it reached a point that it could no longer bear eternity and committed suicide. Its death was violent, producing a tremendous explosion of the separate aspects it represented.

One of these aspects was Time: the indefinite continued progress of existence and events that occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future. Eventually, this aspect as well as the others were discovered by the Elders of the Universe, and were gathered and forged into concentrated ingots. The one that contained the passage of events of the universe became the Time Gem.

The Time Stone[]

Infinity Stones 04

The Time Stone after its alteration

Over time, the Time Gem and the other Gems were altered into their present form. The Time Gem, which was formerly a smooth orange oval gem, became a rock glowing with a green light, and was remembered as the Time Stone.

Celestial Acquisition[]

When the Celestials claimed the Infinity Stones for themselves, the Time Stone was taken by Nezarr the Calculator. He predicted that careless use of the Time Stone would result in catastrophe, and so he used it more carefully than any of the other Celestials did their own Stones, making use of tedious calculations and patient thinking with great caution whenever he used it. Desiring to use it to the benefit of the Celestials, Nezarr carefully tapped into its power to predict the future and witness the past for their advantage.

Despite his careful application, Nezarr still received the consequences of Time manipulation when he took daring risks which proved to be beyond his ability to contain. These consequences greatly impacted the Celestial, additionally causing irrepairable damage to the Time continuum that any attempts of his to undo only resulted in further disaster. Nezarr ultimately went insane from the effects of his manipulations gone wrong, and was exiled by the other Celestials once they came together and succeeded in some efforts to fix the damage he caused. The Time Stone was exiled with him, as the Celestials saw its abilities too dangerous and beyond their abilitiy to understand; given that Nezarr was the best of them to carefully calculate the manipulations of time, and even he went mad from the effects.

Gathering of the Orphu[]

Sometime following Nezarr's exile and death, the enigmatic Orphu society came across him and the Time Stone, seeing its effects on his sanity and its dangerous ability to affect the universe around it. The Orphu came together to discuss their course of action; after an incredibly long and patient debate, the Orphu wisely decided such power was too dangerous to keep in the universe, and came up with a way to remove it from potentially falling into the wrong hands and destroying everything. Sacrificing their place in the universe as well as time altogether, the Orphu performed a calculated ritual using the Time Stone that resulted in the society's ascension from Time. They then remained hidden in their exile, having taken the Time Stone from the passage of time and from the universe so that no one could ever use it.

Infinity Crusade[]

The Orphu were eventually visited by Odin, who was on a quest to gather the Infinity Stones to rule the universe. The Orphu congratulated him on his ability to find them despite extracting themselves beyond time, and were able to resist his mental manipulations with the Mind Stone due to a temporal blessing placed upon themselves which locked them in a permanent state of being forever free from mental manipulations, reinforcing this notion as being eternal beings beyond time so that in no future could they be affected. Odin challenged their notion, suggesting that as immortal beings beyond time they would eventually, in their infinite eternal existance, perform every possible outcome and make every possible choice, including agreeing to give him the Time Stone. His manipulation of this logic resulted in his successful breaking of their temporal protection, enabling the Mind Stone to influence them successfully and have them agree he was correct, thus granting him the Time Stone freely.

Once Odin took the Time Stone, he used it to curse the Orphu into an eternal decay of decomposing time that never ends as punishment for refusing to give him the Time Stone in the first place.

After Odin chose to give away the Infinity Stones and become a benevolent ruler, he placed the Time Stone in an interdimensional gap in a similar pocket beyond time and continuity, hiding it from the universe and from time so that someone like him could not simply try to acquire it again and use it for malicious purposes.

The Eye of Agamotto[]

The Time Stone was eventually found by Agamotto, a practitioner of the Mystic Arts from ancient Earth who sought to gather an array of powerful spells and magical objects to give the creatures of Earth an ability to protect themselves from the various mystical threats which plagued its past. On this journey, Agamotto came across a cave, and through a careful ritual was able to peel open the pocket dimension containing the Time Stone. Detecting its great power with his magic sense, Agamotto realized he could not directly harness its power safely but cleaverly worked around this by constructing an artifact which would enable him to indirectly tap into its energies with spells instead. Thus did he create the Eye of Time, enabling him to use the Time Stone's energies to cast time-based spells. Even with this indirect harnessing, Agamotto realized he would need to be extraordinarily careful with his manipulation of time so as to prevent a catastrophe. With the help of this Eye of Time, Agamotto and his followers were able to beat back the mystical threats of Earth and construct many barriers and locks to enable the creatures of Earth to be protected through the future. His legendary use of the Eye of Time resulted in it being dubbed the "Eye of Agamotto."

Shrouded in Secrecy[]

In order to protect the nature of the Eye's power, Agamotto forged another artifact which also became known as the "Eye of Agamotto." To distinguish the two, Agamotto would refer to the Time-controlling artifact as the "Eye of Time," while naming the other artifact the "Eye of Light." While the Eye of Time was the construct containing the Time Stone and harnessed its temporal might, the Eye of Light instead projected a light that could, among other things, see through disguises and illusions, probe the minds of others, and weaken evil powers. While the Eye of Light became restricted to the highest members of the order, the Eye of Time was erased from all knowledge. Kept in the most secured vault within the Kamar-Taj, Agamotto forbade any knowledge of the Eye of Time outside of the highest in the order, with usage restricted to the Sorcerer Supreme. He did, however, permit the librarian Cagliostro to study the artifact and record its power and how to control it within his book.

Passed down through the Masters of the Mystic Arts[]

Throughout the remainder of history, The Book of Cagliostro remained the only tome on Earth to ever have any record of the Eye of Time. Whoever was made the Sorcerer Supreme remained the only individual permitted with accessing the Eye of Time and using it, though their responsibility to uphold the stability of all things restricted them to only harness its power when absolutely necessary, as even tapping into its incredible power for a mere moment risked the possibility of damaging the fabric of reality, among other incomprehensible side effects. The typical usage of the Eye of Time would be to glimpse into the future, to view a possible threat so that the Masters of the Mystic Arts can act to end the threat before it begins.

Defeating the Cult of Dormammu[]

Doctor Strange 07

Doctor Strange using the Eye of Agamotto for the first time

During his studies as a new practitioner of the Mystic Arts, Doctor Steven Strange came upon the Book of Cagliostro in a hidden recession of the library in Kamar-Taj and read it out of curiosity. During his readings, he came across the entries for the Eye of Time, and while reading he also noticed the Eye sitting on its pedistal nearby in the Sorcerer Supreme's viewing room. Wondering about the artifact, Strange retrieved the Eye from its pedistal and tried to tap into it; after succeeding in opening the Eye of Time and activating the Time Stone, he tested its effects by forwarding and rewinding time on an apple he was eating, watching it restore its form and rot away accordingly. Following this, he found the torn pages within the same book that rogue Sorcerer Kaecilius took and began restoring them, finding out his plans to bring Dormammu to Earth. Just as he was accomplishing this, however, his grasp of control over the spell began to slip and time began to fracture around him. Fortunately, the Ancient One found Strange and stopped him from further damaging time, and to their incredible luck Strange's distraction caused the time fractures to automatically repair themselves when he stopped concentrating on the spell. He was warned about the nature of time and that any careless use could result in time breaking beyond repair, and at the least keep the consequences of time to only affect him instead of the universe, suggesting he could be permanently trapped in an eternal time loop of suffering beginnings and endings forever.

Following the chaos of Kaecilius and his Zealots striking down the higher Sorcerers and the illness of the Ancient One, Strange was forced to accept the sudden responsibility to confront the Zealots and help lead the other Sorcerers against them. Guardianship of the Eye of Time also fell upon Strange; the Ancient One permitted him to take it from the pedistal, though warned him to exhaust all of his other options before harnessing the power of time to defeat his enemies, as even the slightest mistake could result in permanent damage that could never be repaired.

Doctor Strange 09

Doctor Strange using the Time Stone against the Zealots

When it seemed all was lost as Kaecilius and his Zealots managed to tear down the barriers of reality and welcomed Dormammu to claim Earth once and for all, Strange had no choice but to tap into the Eye of Time and use its power to reverse the damage the Zealots created. Just as Dormammu approaches Earth, Strange rewinds time back just before the Zealots arrive at the Hong Kong Sanctum, returning Dormammu to his dimension and reversing the many deaths caused. After directing the other Sorcerers to hold the Zealots back, Strange confronts Kaecilius in personal combat, where he manages to use the Eye of Time in minimal ways to hamper his progress.

Doctor Strange 10

Despite preventing the Zealots from breaking the final barriers, Dormammu is able to start breaking through to Earth with his own power thanks to the damage his Zealots already caused. Seeing this, Strange considered reversing time back further but hesitated as he was still a novice and didn't want to get stuck rewinding time past where he wanted. Instead, spurned by Kaecilius suggesting to give in and offer himself to Dormammu, Strange travelled through the breaking fabric of reality and met Dormammu in the Dark Dimension. He then used the Eye of Time to create a permanent time loop between himself and Dormammu, programming it to rewind time back to the loop's creation whenever he was killed, then challenged the entity to negotiate his departure. Dormammu, thinking nothing of the little Sorcerer, quickly killed him without much effort, though thanks to the loop was set back in time and confronted by Strange again.

Initially not noticing it, Dormammu soon came to realize something was happening when time reset itself a couple more times. Strange confirmed the events were not an illusion, though Dormammu could not comprehend what the source of the events were after killing Strange once more. Being beyond time, the nature of time was foreign to Dormammu which while being one of his greatest strengths, was also one of his greatest weaknesses. Strange eventually explained his weapon of time: endless, eternal, forever, dooming Dormammu to relive the fight with Strange without an escape. Dormammu was unable to scare Strange out of it, and quickly grew frustrated and fruitlessly slayed Strange several dozen more times. Each time he did, he was brought back to Strange's arrival, preventing him from progressing further and claiming Earth, nor could he retreat and think of another way around it.

After a painful series of resets, Dormammu finally broke from his frustration and anger at being held back and accepted Strange's demand for negotiation. To his great annoyance, Strange simply commanded Dormammu to leave Earth and never return, or else he would never break the loop. Despite his inflated ego and the bothersome thought of being defeated by such a little, lowly creature, Dormammu nevertheless could not break out of the time manipulation and was forced to conceed, leaving Earth behind. Having defeated Dormammu, Strange returns to Earth and restores the mystical barriers by rewinding time, undoing the damage of the Zealots and preventing anyone's knowledge of these events ever taking place. The Sorcerers then imprison Kaecilius and his Zealots for their servitude to Dormammu and attempting to give Earth to the deity, restraining them with spells to prevent their escape.

The Eye of Time was returned to its pedistal, where the Ancient One believed Strange would eventually master its use someday when he got better at magic, suggesting Strange was his choice to become the next Sorcerer Supreme.

Testing Doctor Strange[]

After Doctor Strange was forced to kill the Ancient One to prevent the Old One Shuma-Gorath from taking over, Strange was put into a trial to master magic in order to take his place as the next Sorcerer Supreme. The cosmic entity Eternity, upon receiving the Ancient One's soul, contacted Strange and put him through a series of tests to determine his capabilities. The final test in this series was a test of time, in which Strange needed to pass a contest against Eternity itself. Managing to succeed, Strange was bestowed with ageless life and was marked on his forehead with a symbol which would only appear when his life was in dire jeopardy, marking him as the Sorcerer Supreme. Passing the tests that the Ancient One had passed 600 years earlier, Strange won the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, and with it the official duty of protecting the Eye of Time, permitted to use it whenever absolutely necessary to protect Earth from mystical threats.

Rescue of Daisy Johnson[]

When Doctor Strange was contacted by Danny Ketch and Peter Quill thanks to Johnny Blaze's suggestion, he brought his ultimate weapon, the Eye of Time, to Lilith's Realm to help them rescue a human soul from the self-proclaimed "Mother of Demons." Strange kept the Eye's nature concealed, never tapping into it on their way to rescue Daisy from being sacrificed to Lilith.

However, upon reaching Lilith at the ritual site, Strange and the others realized they arrived too late as Lilith had succeeded in consuming the human's soul shortly before they showed up. Lilith proclaimed their cause to be lost, and engaged the group in battle to put them away from her concern forever. Despite his abilities, Strange's conventional magic was not enough to defeat Lilith's own sorcery, and there was still the matter of Daisy being dead. Thus, in a moment of pause when Lilith offered him one chance to surrender his soul, Strange opened the Eye of Time and trapped the realm into a time loop just as he did to Dormammu.

Lilith, after several repeats of killing Strange, was slowly able to gather her situation and dismissed Strange's efforts, claiming her magic was capable of breaking them out. She came to recognize the source of the time magic, however, and seeing it came from an Infinity Stone, she couldn't help but accept she could never break out of it on her own. Furthermore, Strange started tapping into the Time Stone with greater ease than he could with Dormammu, rewinding Daisy specifically to restore her to life. In an ever regressing loop, Lilith cast Strange aside with her magic, giving her enough time to consume Daisy's soul completely and kill her again before Strange rewound time again to make Daisy younger with each repeat. Despite Lilith's efforts, she could not stop Daisy from getting younger, to the point she was too young to seduce and even beyond to be put in time before she ever existed.

Deprived of her prize, Lilith lashed out at Strange, managing to break the timeline in two; in one, she finally breaks the loop and kills the invaders, securing Daisy for herself and permanently consuming her soul. In the other, Strange is able to maintain the loop long enough for Lilith to accept Strange taking Daisy's body from the realm if he will break the loop. Lilith believes they won't be able to steal the human's soul from her, seeing the loss of her prize's body worth keeping the soul. Thus, Strange and the others are able to depart Lilith's Realm with Daisy's corpse.

Strange, exhausting himself with the manipulation of time, restrains from further use for the time being and instead suggests his companions to seek the help of Asgard to inquire on one of the other Stones. Thus, they succeed in restoring Daisy to life with the Soul Stone, stealing her away from Lilith.

Description[]

Infinity Stones 13

The Time Stone contained within The Eye of Agamotto/The Eye of Time

The Time Gem was originally smooth and shaped like an oval, only 2 inches long from top to bottom. It was colored orange, and all the powers and energies associated with its use were also colored orange.

Over time, the Time Gem was transformed into its current form, known as the Time Stone. It changed into something more like a rock, and became green in color. As time passed, one of its former users decided to shape it into a smoother oval form.

Containment Device[]

Eye of Agamotto 01

The Eye of Agamotto/The Eye of Time

The Eye of Agamotto, also known as the Eye of Time, is the name given to the storage unit used to house the Time Stone. It was created by Agamotto, the first Sorcerer Supreme, and has been kept by the Masters of the Mystic Arts within the deepest vault of Kamar-Taj. It has been used by those that held the title of Sorcerer Supreme, who is charged with protecting the powerful artifact as well as using it in only the most dire of circumstances to protect the Earth from mystic threats.

Powers/Abilities[]

The Time Stone embodies the universal aspect of Time. It can be seen as a sort of dial, a control unit for any and all of Time, the ongoing occurrence of events, within the universe; as such, it provides its wielder access to various means of manipulating the passage of time through history to infinite levels. This can be applied in a number of different ways.

Temporal Glimpse[]

At its most basic level, the Time Stone allows its user to observe events that occur outside their current point in Time.

  • Past Vision: The Time Stone lets its user look back in time within the past, and see any event that has already occured in history.
  • Present Vision: The Time Stone lets its user observe an event as it is occurring in the present, seeing what is going on at their same time.
  • Future Vision: The Time Stone lets its user view what is going to happen towards the future, seeing anything that will occur after a set amount of time.

Temporal Distortion[]

Even at low-level use, the Time Stone grants its user a significant advantage by subtley influencing the passage of time to their will.

  • Time-Slow: The Time Stone can minimally reduce the speed of time's passage in reference to the user, giving the illusion that the wielder has enhanced reflexes; gaining a better "reaction time" by increasing the amount of time the user has to react.
  • Time-Speed: The Time Stone can minimally increase the speed of time's passage in reference to the user, giving the illusion that the wielder has reduced reflexes; this allows the wielder to perceive events in a reduced time-frame, by seeing things in "fast-forward."

Timeline View[]

The Time Stone, having power over all of time, allows its user to view and access their singular Timeline as well as a variety of others.

  • Timeline Creation: The Time Stone can create an entirely new Timeline, either branching out of a current Timeline or a completely new one, complete with a full occurrence of events with an entire history of past, present and future.
  • Timeline Alteration: The Time Stone can change events that happen within a set Timeline, allowing the future to be changed by shifting any single or multitude of events within its past.
  • Timeline Deletion: The Time Stone can erase any Timeline, either in portions by getting rid of past history, present occurrences, or potential futures and therefore making that Timeline finite, or completely wiping out all events in the Timeline to full deletion, causing everything that ever happened within to cease to exist.

Time Passage[]

The Time Stone, the ultimate medium in controlling time, has the ability to change the way time flows.

  • Time Slow: The Time Stone can cause time to slow down, decreasing the speed in which events occur, enabling the user to observe events in slow motion and react accordingly.
  • Time Stop: The Time Stone can completely halt time by reducing the speed of time passage to zero; this time freeze allows its user to affect objects and beings without consequence, as they are frozen in time and do not move or react until time resumes.
  • Time Speed: The Time Stone can cause time to speed up, increasing the rate that events occur, allowing the user to "fast-forward" events in fast motion to their desires.
  • Time Reverse: Normally, time flows forward towards the future; The Time Stone can cause time to flow backwards by changing the rate of passage to occur in negative order. This allows them to "rewind" time towards the past, undoing any events that occurred within a Timeline and returning them to a previous state.

Age Manipulation[]

The Time Stone can affect the passage of time for singular objects and beings outside of their Timeline to affect their age.

  • Age: The Time Stone can change the age of an item or creature, setting it at a point of existence further along its Timeline, effectively making it older. This can be done from a small effect to a drastic point that they become too old to support themselves or crumble to dust.
  • Age Acceleration: The Time Stone can increase the rate that an item or creature ages, fast forwarding its passage of time in reference to its Timeline. This forces the individual item or creature to age faster, reaching its end state sooner than it would naturally.
  • Age Decceleration: The Time Stone can decrease the rate that an item or creature ages, slowing down its passage of time in reference to its Timeline. This allows the individual item or creature to age slower, reaching its end state later than it would naturally.
  • Age Halt: The Time Stone can stop the rate that an item or creature ages. This essentially grants it immortality, though only through the effect that it cannot die or cease to exist by the passage of time alone.
  • De-Age: The Time Stone can change the age of an item or creature, setting it back at a certain point of its history, effectively making it younger. This can be done from a small effect to a drastic point that they cease to exist, as they are put past the point they were ever created.
  • De-Age Acceleration: The Time Stone can increase the rate that an item or creature ages in reverse, fast rewinding its passage of time in reference to its Timeline. This forces the individual item or creature to grow younger at a fast speed.
  • De-Age Decceleration: The Time Stone can decrease the rate that an item or creature ages in reverse, slowing down the speed in which it rewinds in reference to its Timeline. This slows how fast it grows younger.

Time Travel[]

The Time Stone can transport its user to any point in time instantaneously.

  • Travel to the Past: The Time Stone can transport its user to any place in time within the past, putting them in a select reference point in history that has already happened. This allows them to alter an event to change the present or future, which has become their collective future from their point of view.
  • Travel to the Present: The Time Stone can transport its user to their "present point" from any place in time within the past or future, returning them to their originating destination. This allows them to see the effects of changes in the past, or return to a previous point before the changes made to the future have occurred.
  • Travel to the Future: The Time Stone can transport its user to any place in time within the future, putting them in a select reference point in a history that has yet to occur from their perspective. This allows them to view events that are going to happen from their past or present course, which has become their collective past from their point of view.
  • Travel to Alternate Timelines: The Time Stone can transport its user outside their current Timeline and place them within another. Within this alternate time, the Time Stone can place them anywhere along its history, within a perceived Past, Present, or Future.

Time Duplication[]

The Time Stone allows its user to summon objects or creatures from various points in the Past or Future.

  • Past-Duplication: The Time Stone grants its user the ability to call upon any item or being from the past and transport it to the present. This runs the risk of erasure, as if a past version of something is destroyed, all subsequently future variations cease to exist.
  • Future-Duplication: The Time Stone grants its user the ability to call upon any item or being from the future and transport it to the present. This runs the risk of erasure, though only for future variations from the point of that future duplicate.

Temporal Loop[]

The Time Stone can fold the flow of time back on itself to a previous reference point, locking it in to create a Time Loop.

  • Time Loop Creation: The Time Stone can create a Time Loop to occur between two select events within the flow of time; this generates a standard passage of time from point A, the starting point, to end at part B and repeat starting back at point A.
  • Time Loop Manipulation: While within a Time Loop, the Time Stone can affect all events within as normal, speeding up, slowing down, stopping, or reversing the passage of time, aging and de-aging, and other manipulations of time. This allows them to alter the effects of time within the Loop. Additionally, the Time Stone can set the Time Loop to occur a set number of times, either finite or repeating infinitely throughout eternity.
  • Time Loop Erasure: The Time Stone can dismiss a Time Loop, deleting the repeating point B from sending events to go back to point A and erasing point A to allow the possibility of returning to the past to return.

Fourth-Dimension Existence[]

The Time Stone can transport its user outside the plane of time itself, allowing them to view and interact with it as a tangible field like the standard three dimensions.

  • Time-Ascension: The user of the Time Stone can exist outside the passage of time; no longer bound by the ongoing occurrence of events, they are able to see all things from the farthest point in the past to the farthest point in the future. They are able to access any point of it at will, and can see all past, present and future at once.
  • Time-Return: The user of the Time Stone can return to the boundaries of time at any point, resuming a state of being affected by the passage of time. From here, they view things as normal, existing within the fourth-dimension and being bound by it.

Side-effect[]

Once the Time Gem became the Time Stone, it seemingly lost its controlled quality and became highly unstable. Therefore, anyone that attempts to access its power suffers the risk of being overwhelmed and obliterated by this power. This can have a variety of negative effects for users and those nearby. As time is incredibly difficult to control and is particularly fragile when constrained by great force, the first thing that happens when the stone's use goes wrong is the fragmentation of the fabric of time and reality; time will typically begin to crack and split off into numerous variations that get worse as time goes on or the use of its power is continued. From here, the loss of control could possibly result in unstable openings and breaks in the space-time continuum, spatial paradoxes, time loops, or even complete deletion of the user from existence.

Summary[]

Overall, the Time Stone allows its user the full control over time, from all points of history in any past, present, or future of any timeline, and control over the rate at which time flows, from speeding up to slowing down, stopping, and even rewinding time, and containing the passage of time in an ongoing loop.
